Container City

Around the world, trade imbalances have created huge surpluses of steel shipping containers. Because of their relatively cheap cost and modular flexibility, many are now being repurposed. Uses so far have included housing, museums, cafes, and shopping stalls. Traveling around the world now is the Nomadic museum exhibiting the photographic works of Gregory Colbert entitled “Ashes and Snow.” Designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, It is made of 152 reused steel shipping containers and curtains made from paper tea bags. Container City is being featured at the London Festival of Architecture and has completed projects as diverse as mixed use housing complexes, live/work lofts, music studios, and schools from shipping containers.
